As of July 1, 2015, the fine for being an uninsured driver in Tennessee increased from $100 to $300 (and it's a Class A Misdemeanor). After January 1, 2016, law enforcement officials can have your vehicle towed on the spot if you don’t have proof of insurance. Leading up to January 1, 2017, the state of Tennessee will be implementing an online program to verify drivers’ insurance. This new program will be able to locate drivers who have not purchased valid insurance through their vehicle registration information. Owners without insurance will be unable to renew their vehicle’s registration.
